This a relative of Arcella. When trying to ID this protozoan I could only find one photograph on the internet, that was on the Protist Server.
The first one seems to be inactive and the second one could have a little cytoplasm showing but not very clear. These two were brightfield. The 3rd one is Phase Contrast whilst the fourth one is my version of oblique brightfield.

Beautiful images, Ken! Very nice application of different techniques. This organism looks a little bit similar to Arcella gibbosa.

Piotr they do look alike and maybe the same. When I did a search I just looked at as many shelled amoeba that I could find and the Antarcella was the only one I could find like it. I just had a look for Arcella Gibbosa and most of the pics I found have one arc of the shell turned back like a sheet. See http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/indexmag.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artsep01/shelled.html
Its an amazing little world out there!

Steve, I am retired and because of my complaint I can't get out very much so I have nothing much else to do - I'll swap you! Laughing

Congrats KenV. A most deserving image and I like the way it shows the different results based on technique used.
