Post by Wim van Egmond »

I found this fly with strange modfied mouthparts. It was feeding on nectar. Does anyone have an idea which genus?

I've probably seen flies like this but I can't say that I know what species they are. Pretty neat how it holds its back legs up in the air while at rest. :D

Thanks Ken,

It was cleaning its wings with its legs!

Very different mouthparts on this one Wim. Very large hairs on his abdomen also. Great picture.

Very unusual mouthparts! My reference books don't show anything remotely like this, and I don't have a clue what it is. Sorry. :(

(Excellent picture, by the way!)
