Diatom Life Cycle?

Post by Red Seven »

In a recent sample from one of my jars of marine water I found a large concentration of what I think are diatoms. There were many of them but pictured below are just a couple to explain my question. Most were very similar but some seemed to look like 2 diatoms back to back and I wondered if this was a process of meiosis or something or if these were just 2 different things. Later I found a cluster of what, again looked similar but much smaller ones. There was only this one cluster of smaller ones with no individuals wondering around.
Are these even diatoms?
Anybody able to help me figure out what's happening here?
