The identity of this is still elusive. They are common here in S. NH. The head, eyes and moutn parts are tucked underneath the carapace. The first image is with the specimen on it back. I get the impression that it could peek forward by the way the eyes are situated.

From the inset and your description, it appears to be some firefly (Coleoptera:Lampyridae).
