New member from the UK

Danny, Michael, and I (Tom) couldn't be happier and more impressed with our members and friends! It would be wonderful if we all got to know each other better. Here's a forum to post images and short autobiographies of ourselves as well as any other info you would like to post about yourself. We are looking forward to meeting you all!

New member from the UK

Hi everyone.

My name is Mike and I live in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire in the UK although I'm really a "Northerner", at least by birth. I'm new to the forum but I'm already amazed by the quality of the work I've seen on here and have found it a great help to get me fired up and back into microscopy after a very long break ! I always remember how thrilled I was to get my first scope one Christmas long, long ago!

I'm an embedded software engineer of some 20 years and currently work with DSP and digital video recording. I have little if any spare cash so my budget is a bit limited. I recently got hold of a used trinocular LOMO MBC 10 stereo with photo adaptor and I've posted a question on the technical questions forum about it. Please take a look to see if you can help me on that one! I'm hoping to save up the pennies to buy a good used, or maybe even new, compound scope in the near future.

Hi to everyone and congratulations on a very friendly and informative site,

Mike Bailey

Hi Mike and welcome to the forums. I do not know anything about the LOMO's but some of our members use them and they are getting some good results with them. I am pleased to read that you enjoy our forums and find them informative, we have a great bunch of folks here who are always helpful and friendly. Yes I too remember a Christmas morning many years in the past, when I got my first good microscope. Ah, the enthusiasm I had back then, the world was filled with wonder and amazement. Of course I still have it but it does not seem to be as intense these days as it was in childhood  . Again Mike, Welcome! :D

Hi Mike

I seen your post on the LOMO, but since I am mostly macro, I cannot comment. I do dabble with the Zeiss scope and will do more this winter in that arena. I am sure someone will post information that will be useful to you.

Look forward to viewing your post and don't forget Macro

Ken,

Thanks for the welcome message. I see you're in NC. I was out there in New Bern/Wilmington/Atlantic City area but mainly around the Cherry Point naval base with my CNC work over 10 years ago. I just remember the amazing forests that lined the highway from New Bern to Raleigh Durham, the great FM rock music stations and a real Mexican restaurant where they made Chilli that was almost as good as my wonderful wife Sue makes. My kind of place! What a difference to where I live now in the soulless flat and boggy lands of Fenland Britain. It must be a really wonderful place for any lover of nature to live !

Not done much with my new purchase yet - the panic of Christmas
is setting in and there's lots more to do yet. I'm hoping to get some digital pics done in between the festivities and I'll post them when I get a chance. Thanks again for the welcome.
Cheers
Mike

Early starters !!!

Post by mikebailey61 »

Hi Sue

Wow, you people out there in the west get up really early! I can just about say I live in the West, being about 10 miles from the Greenwich meridian! Thanks for your welcome message. I see that you too, like Ken, live in a very beautiful part of the world.

I think I'm going to concentrate on more macro than micro work to begin with - I haven't got the gear to do the high magnification and specialised lighting and contrast stuff just yet but my LOMO stereo does allow me to go up to 200X with transmitted and incident illumination so it's a start!

Cheers
Mike
