Yep. Uroleptus was what came to mind when I first saw this. Uroleptus piscis is the closest in Kahl's listing because of the posterior "kink." However my particular specimens lack the slight ovoid morphology shown in Kahl. Also, I can't figure out the dark material posterior. This is characteristic-...

Ciliate ID help needed
Right now I'm involved in doing some video work with Protozoa. The requirements of the job require organism ID. This one's got me stumped, although the cirri is a dead giveaway for the Hypotrich group. Jahn's book doesn't have it. The posterior "kink" to the left and the dark material near the poste...

Hmmm. Interesting idea. However, glycerine would be more prone to drying than is oil and could be a pain if the objective was not carefully cleaned after use. A one-user scope would probably not be a problem. I remember in the medical lab I worked in, except for me nobody EVER cleaned the oil off a ...

Sticky Mechanical Stage
Perhaps this is very obvious and I may be silly to mention it. If the bottom of the slide is wet, it will stick badly. Make sure that the slide surface that touches the stage is dry.

Gosh, I thought that part of the above message would turn into a clickable link. I'm still new at this. Maybe you can cut and paste as needed.

The color of lighting
The color temperature of tungsten is about 3200 degrees Kelvin down to 2800 for low "romantic" lighting. That of electronic flash approximates daylight, which is about 6400 degrees Kelvin. The higher the number, the bluer the light. You may want to play around with the light at it's source. You may ...

A Microscope for blood cells
I spent 36 years looking at blood cells--now I'm retired. Mostly, you need a microscope with an oil immersion (usually 100x) objective. It would also be handy to have a good 40x high dry. You may be able to get a 40x oil objective but these are rare treasures. I've seen some techs do WBC differentia...
