So you folks just found a clean mouse skull, eh? It's nice to know that these things happen to other people too. Note to the cat..."Go find a spinal column". Frez, do you have any idea what in particular it is that fluoresces that bright green? I think it is more of a reflected light application at...

Mouse Teeth

A very odd thing happened last night. My mom, who lives downstairs, and is a good housekeeper, came upstairs and asked what she had found. It was a clean mouse skull. She had found it in a candy dish on her piano next to some mints. We do live in the country and have an occassional house mouse that ...

Hi Ken Resolution seems to take an apparent hit as structures glow around the edges of lines. It's also a bear to image properly. There isn't a lot of light in the field of view so a slow shutter speed produces the best contrast, but moving objects need a faster shutter speed. My Oly DP10 isn't vers...

Vorticella

This time I wrote down the filters. The problem is there is no way to verify if my assumptions are correct. The AO catalog for the vertical illuminator lists the filters as being: Exciters: 1 - FITC 2 - BG12 + KV418 3 - IF436nm 4 - IF546nm Dichroic Beam Splitters: 1 - 450nm 2 - 500nm 3 - 560nm Barri...

Thanks Rene. I forgot to write down the filters used and being new to fluorescence I can't guess what is causing the green. Sorry I can't answer more directly.

Nice link Sue. I'll not attempt to comprehend Snell's law, but other parts of the page are extremely useful. At first glance I now have just enough knowledge to get in trouble as I go in search of a diamond cover slip. :D

Thanks

Hi Rik I was absolutely in no way insulted and I genuinely hope that nobody thinks that. I will absorb as much of what was said as possible and put it away for future reference. Every bit of knowledge, no matter how mundane, obtuse, or, for some of us, incomprehensible, will at some point, even for ...

Well I kind of figured NA was related to some archaic mathematical formula that was going to be difficult for me to grasp. The beginners forum seemed like the ideal place to get a dumbed down answer. :) Now that the truth is out, my buddy and I, Jethro Bodine, are glad to know that it all relates to...

Numerical Aperture

Does anyone know what units of measurement describe NA? For example my computer screen has a diagonal measurement of 17 inches. My 10x objective has a numerical aperture of .25 ???. It's not important. I've just never been able to find an answer.

Thanks

These are really beautiful. Why are they so differently colored? The BF might be nice, but the DIC is a treat to see.

Thanks

Crystal Growth

A few weeks ago I was playing with growing some crystals. These might be from confectioner's sugar. :?: This was imaged with EPI fluorescence and transmitted crossed polars.
