Hi Mike,

Thanks for the feedback.

I used a ringlight (reflected light) to illuminate the aphid. (So far diazanone has had little effect on these guys so Gwen's plants may lose the battle!)

Aphid

Here is a picture of an aphid busily sucking the juices out of one of my wife’s plants. The image was taken with a Coolpix 4500 on a Leica M420. The magnification is around 30x.

Water Bear Claws

Here is a picture of a water bear making its way across the underside of the cover glass. One can see the tiny claws the animal uses to hold on to material while feeding. http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/waterbear.JPG Nikon D50 Zeiss Photomicroscope II Zeiss 10x S-Kpl eyepiece Zeiss Plan-Neof...

Beautiful image Gerd! I agree, the new size is perfect. They look better with DIC then with phase contrast. Maybe one of these days I will get lucky and score a DIC setup for my Photomic.

Hi David,

Very nice examples of oblique and phase contrast. I will have to try making a stop for my condenser; with my setup offsetting the aperture diaphragm does not always produce the best oblique effect.

Paramecium bursaria

This a brightfield image of Paramecium bursaria with hereditary symbiontic Chlorella algae. Ran an internet search and found that the Chlorella themselves are often host to virus that can destroy them (lytic). However, while inside the host paramecium, the Chlorella is protected from the virus. On t...

Wow - a super series of images!! I am amazed that the Floscularia is still functioning normally with the 100x - must have been a lot of pressure on the poor critter.

Diatom grouping

While observing diatoms from a stream near my house I came across a trio of Navicula diatoms cruising about in the field of view. At first they were moving about individually, however after a while they came together as shown in the first image. After that they formed a line as shown in the second p...

Charlie you "getting up to speed with this DIC" very quickly! These are excellent DIC images - clean and bright. I especially like the diatom shot.

Charles thanks for the ecology notes. The slide I used for this picture is a test slide made in Germany. I will watch for these in local streams once spring arrives (your map suggests there should be some in my area). Rene I checked the other end with my 63x. Even with indirect lighting I could not ...

Hi Rene - thanks for setting me straight on this one. Diatom identification is not my strong suit - I should always put a question mark after the name! Here is a picture of one of the ends – should more structure be visible?

Well done Ken - I came across these about a year ago and found them very difficult to image, especially the ciliary array which you have managed to capture perfectly. Here is a labeled diagram of their anatomy.
