Empty Amoeba Test

This empty house showed up just as I was getting a new scope up to snuff. Does the Amoeba build this from small pieces of debris? Wish it was that easy for us big creatures. :) http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/Otpovar_1.0x_003.jpg Zeiss Standard 18 40x .75 Neofluar Sony DKC-CM30 w/.38x Optem ...

Rik, The problems are within the left eye and the upper portion of the right one. At first I thought the pattern of the eyes was causing problems with the software, but the lower portion of the right eye looks ok. I tried a stack of 49 and another of 103 with new frames. Both had the same result. Re...

Thanks Piotr. I bought a new HBO lamp and it made a big difference. The old one was starting to blacken on the inside and was casting shawdows on the image. There's an eBay seller that offers them at $75 USD. The cheapest found on the web was $110.

Yellow Jacket

I worked hard trying to get a good stack with a 4x objective in both CZ and HF. It just wouldn't come out right. Any suggestions or tips...

Thanks

Beware nothin'...it's a lucky insect that gets immortalized under your scope. Wonderfully done and thanks for the tips.

Scully and I were having some Scotch and sodas last night and we figured it was best to leave Fox out of the loop. He'd just want to come over and spoil everything.

These arachnids have only one body part and are not true spiders. This was done with a 4x objective. The stack was done in Helicon Focus and is of 30 images. Can you find the 6 eyes?

Very interesting! I assume the balls are encased in a type of natural glue that fastens them to the other balls.

A Better Beetle

The identity of this is still elusive. They are common here in S. NH. The head, eyes and moutn parts are tucked underneath the carapace. The first image is with the specimen on it back. I get the impression that it could peek forward by the way the eyes are situated. 10x Objective EPI Flourescence 9...

The DSLR, or a high grade lensed prosumer camera, wouldn't effect the stacking. The DP10's slowest shutter speed is 1/4 second. That's where the problem arises when shooting fluorescence. It's better when imaging chlorophyl based specimens that fluoresce red because of the CCD's increased sensitivit...

Beetle

This image demonstrates the viability of shooting insects under fluorescence. This beetle wasn't left in the killing jar long enough and still had some movement while on the slide. CombineZ5 did a good job of aligning the frames with its automatic settings. Some frame offsets were as much as 23 (pix...

So what is the tube made of? Does the Rotifer make those cells or is it some type of symbiotic relationship? Well done!

Well you can always count on the good ol' rotifers to be there. Now disconnect the fiber cable from its source and hold it up to your camera's flash. It works well.

Hi Bernhard Yes, those are Gomphonema. The red is caused by EPI fluorescence. By using strong filters from the transmitted source, I am able to create a balance between the two. Here is the same specimen with a different transmitted filter. Frez http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/Untitled-5.jpg
