Squid Radula & Suction Cups

Howdy from Texas... it's been a while since I've had much to post but today we were dissecting a squid ( Loglio spp) with my 6th graders and we had time to get out the dissecting microscope attached to a Moticam 2000 and got nice shots of both the squid's radula (the "tongue" it uses to grind up foo...

Mike, <twilight zone music begins playing> After looking at your last two posts (Emerald Tree Viper & this Gaboon Viper) I was shocked that I took 2 very similar images on Monday when I visited the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, TX. What are the odds that 2 zoos in our neck of the woods (North TX/Okla) h...

Having just stumbled across this topic, I thought I might add my two cents worth. I am a Middle school biology teacher/ vice principal at a school for gifted & talented boys here in Dallas. Since I was a kid (I am 39 now) I have loved to see what worlds are revealed under the microscope. However, in...

Microscopic photography setup question (basic)

Howdy Folks! I've been away for a while thanks to work & family obligations, but am suspecting I may be encoutering a financial windfall in the coming months. As a teacher with access to student quality scopes & several Moticam 2000 video cameras, I've managed to do a bit of "micro-videography"over ...

Another Micromarvels Mystery

The following image is a cilliate we observed at Micromarvels camp yesterday but could not ID....the image was taken with a Moticam 2000 & total magnification is 400X. Any thoughts as to the species?

THANKS!

Mystery at "micromarvels camp"

Howdy & greetings! I've been away for a while but am back now & am currently running a summer program called "micromarvels" which has 5 middle school students enrolled this week. The other day we found this creature in a pond sample- (it was from an algal scraping). it was taken with a 10X objective...

A Mother's Day Gift?

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/Image04.jpg This latest video is a spring time treat of color! Green Euglenas swim next to the earthy Sprirostomum and the ravenous yet graceful pink hues of Blepharisma..... a reminder that not all the color this time of year comes in the form of flowers. Wo...

Cool Caddisfly Larva - I think.... :)

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/caddisfly1.jpg My latest video came about as I was investigating some water a colleague gave me. Almost immediately, I stumbled across a planarian which was difficult to view & focus upon using the standard classroom scope I was looking through. Shortly after...

Thanks for the kind words, Piotr ! When I first noticed the "exocytosis" occuring I assumed the cell was about to lose it's integrity as more material (both in quantity & variety) than expected was ejected from the cell. I also could not see any evidence of a clear cut vacuole which would fit with a...

Two new videos

Here are descriptions of two new videos I just posted on my page at: http://www.smtexas.net/faculty/mead/index02.htm Video #1 : Paramecium feeds on carmine powder This video came about when we were "feeding" paramecium carmine powder and were able to actually see some of the particles travel down th...

Thanks Ken! This one was a great find as I was looking over a sample from the Trinity River for our AP Environmental Science teacher while my 6th graders were taking a test. Several students wondered what I was up to as I got quite excited once I figured out that the little green dots were indeed St...

Ron,

VERY Nice picture. These guys rarely stay still for that long in my experience. Nice detail of the cillia and the internal structures. All of our critters should be as accommodating as this fella! Good work!
