It has no affect on brightness, depth of field, or the in focus image. It can affect the out of focus image and usually that is refered to bokeh. The more blades, the better the bokeh.

Your head made cause a shadow because of short working distances. The umbrella could get caught is a bunch of things and I would hate to work with it on a windy day, but I can see advantages in the rain. Naturally, it would not turn heads in NYC, but others may be alarmed - don't wear it at airports.

If you don't mind used equipment, you can get some great deals on ebay - go to the business and industrial section and seach for a manufacturer's name such as Olympus, Nikon, Zeiss, Leica, Wild, American Optical, etc. Then start digging. I bought an Olympus Vanox research microscope with DIC for a f...

Ah, Contax. One of the first victims to the digital revolution. Bronica, Konica Minolta, and Mamiya added theirs names to the list as well. Many of the other large names in the business are having to go through major changes - the Pentax 67 is a thing of the past. Still, Zeiss Ikon has returned and ...

I take it Castrol GTX, while being liquid engineering, is not the stuff. Or does all oil used in microscopy have the same refractive index? Any tips about usi...

I have the series on DVD. It is full of excellent photography, but as one of the "Life" series, it is disappointing. It is more of a collection of "neat" bug stuff rather than interweaving tales creating a larger story like the other "Life" programs.
