No I always use it handheld, it's much more flexible.

Another way to reduce highlights is to use indirect flash.
It works great on shiny beetles and ants.

Yes they realy watch you, they walk away and turn around to look at you.
I saw one today cathing a litle fly (while i was looking trough the lens), it was a realy quick and short jump.
Unfortunately i was too late to take a picture.
